Peter Maher

THE IMPORTANCE OF COURAGE IN AN INCREASINGLYGLOBAL MARKETPLACE

Webster University –Graduation, Chengdu

AVP for International Campuses and Initiatives

February 27, 2016

I am VERY honoured to be HERE WITH YOU TODAY, representing Webster University. I bring greetings from our university President, dr. ELIZABETH STROBLE, and from THE PROVOST, DR. Julian Schuster.  they BOTH send their congratulations and very best wishes TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU.

just recently, IN November, Webster university finished a year long celebration of 100 years as an institution. so for you to graduate at this time is very special IN THE CONTEXT OF THE WEBSTER.WEBSTER UNIVERSITY ANDTHE UNIVERSITY OF ELECTRONIC SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY OF CHINA HAS BEEN PARTNERS FOR 14 YEARS.  WE GREATLY VALUE this partnership– AND DAYS LIKE TODAY, WHEN WE Come together to HONOUR OUR GRADUATES, MAKE IT EXTRA SPECIAL.

Graduates, today we are here to celebrate your most recent academic accomplishment. Your graduation is a cause for ENORMOUS celebration, a moment in time to savoUr the accomplishment and to give thanks to your professors and to family and friends who encouraged you during your studies. it is no small task to attend business school while also working full-time and tending to family and friends. we are ALL very proud of you.

THIS IS THE FIRST OF TWO TRIPS TO CHINA THAT I’LL BE MAKING OVER THE NEXT 2 WEEKS.  IN MARCH I’LL BE TAKING A GROUP OF GRADUATE STUDENTS TO BEIJING, AND INTRODUCING THEM TO BUSINESS INNOVATIONS AND CHALLENGES IN CHINA, AS WELL AS THE INCREDIBLE CULTURE OF YOUR WONDERFUL COUNTRY.  EACH TIME I HAVE RUN THIS CLASS IT HAS BEEN AN AMAZING LEARNING OPPORTUNITY FOR THE STUDENTS, AND THE MOST REWARDING EXPERIENCE FOR ME AS AN INSTRUCTOR.  HAVING AN EXPOSURE TO THE BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT IN CHINA CHANGES THEIR PERSPECTIVES IN SO MANY WAYS, AND PLAYS A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN SHAPING THEIR CAREER PATH.

AS BUSINESSES BECOME INCREASINGLY GLOBAL, HAVING THIS TYPE OF INTER-CULTURAL EXPERIENCE IS A TREMENDOUS FOUNDATION FOR FUTURE CAREER SUCCESS.  THIS TYPE OF OPPORTUNITY IS AVAILABLE TO ALL WEBSTER STUDENTS, BUT THE KEY TO PARTICIPATION IS HAVING THE COURAGE TO DO SO. HAVING THE COURAGE TO PARTICIPATE IN SOMETHING THAT IS NEW, AND TAKES YOU OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE, CAN HAVE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON YOU FUTURE CAREER.

IT’S A LITTLE BIT LIKE HAVING THE COURAGE TO EAT SPICY SICHUAN FOOD FOR THE FIRST TIME.  JUST IMAGINE WHAT YOU WOULD BE MISSING IF YOU DIDN’T TRY IT!  IT IS, BY THE WAY, MY FAVOURITE FOOD OF ALL.

AS GRADUATES OF WEBSTER UNIVERSITY IN CHENGDU, CHINA, YOU ARE IN A UNIQUE AND VERY POWERFUL POSITION.  YOU HAVE NOT ONLY GRADUATED WITH AN MBA, BUT YOU HAVE DONE SO THROUGH THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, AND HAVE DEVELOPED AN UNDERSTANDING OF BUSINESS CHALLENGES BOTH FROM A CHINESE AND WESTERN PERSPECTIVE.

WITH THE NUMEROUS EXAMPLES OF HOW CORPORATIONS IN CHINA ARE QUICKLY BECOMING INCREASINGLY GLOBAL, IT IS VERY EASY TO ENVISAGE HOW THESE SKILLS WILL BE DIRECTLY APPLICABLE IN TODAY’S BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT.

A RECENT EXAMPLE, CHONGQING’S CASIN ENTERPRISE GROUP ARE PROPOSING TO PURCHASE THE CHICAGO STOCK EXCHANGE, ONE OF THE OLDEST EXCHANGES IN THE UNITED STATES.  A KEY GOAL OF THE CASIN GROUP IS TO LIST CHINESE COMPANIES IN THE UNITED STATES, AIMING AT LONG-TERM U.S INVESTMENT.

ANOTHER EXAMPLE PERTAINS TO THE SO-CALLED ‘HYPERLOOP’, WHICH IS A FUTURISTIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM THAT WILL CARRY PASSENGERS IN CAPSULES AT SPEEDS OF MORE THAN 800 KILOMETERS PER HOUR.  CHINA RAILWAY MAY ENABLE ELON MUSK’S VISION TO BECOME A REALITY.

COMING FROM ENGLAND, I AM A HUGE FAN OF FOOTBALL.  IN THE JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW, CHINESE CLUBS PAID OVER ONE BILLIONRMB FOR INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS, WHICH IS 130 MILLION RMB MORE THAN ENGLISH CLUBS.

THESE SIMPLE EXAMPLES DEMONSTRATE HOW ALL TYPES OF BUSINESSES ARE BECOMING MORE AND MORE GLOBAL.  YOU ARE EXTREMELY WELL POSITIONED TO PLAY A KEY ROLE IN THIS GLOBAL BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT, AND I URGE YOU TO HAVE THE COURAGE TO CONTRIBUTE IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE.

WITH THIS IN MIND, I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE SOME THOUGHTS FOR YOU TO CONSIDER AS YOU EMBARK ON THE NEXT PHASE OF YOUR CAREER:

1) COURAGE IS DOING WHAT YOU ARE AFRAID TO DO.  THERE CAN BE NO COURAGE UNLESS YOU ARE SCARED.

WINSTON CHURCHILL, THE FORMER BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, SERVES AS A REMINDER THAT INDEED THE FUTURE BELONGS TO THOSE WHO CAN SEE IT. HE SAID – “COURAGE IS THE FIRST OF ALL HUMAN QUALITIES BECAUSE IT GUARANTEES ALL OTHERS.”  AS THE BUSINEES WORLD EXPANDS AT A PACE NEVER SEEN BEFORE, HAVE THE CONFIDENCE OF KNOWING THAT YOUR EDUCATION HAS PUT YOU IN A POSITION TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE, AND HAVE THE COURAGE TO PUSH THE BOUNDARIES OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE.

2) WE WERE ALL BORN ORIGINALS, WHY SPEND THE REST OF OUR LIVES TRYING TO BE COPIES?  STAY ORIGINALS!

REMEMBER THAT EACH OF YOU HAS UNIQUE QUALITIES TO BRING TO THE TABLE.  HAVE THE COURAGE TO CONTINUE TO USE THEM.

3) A ROAD WITHOUT POTHOLES (BUMPS) IS A ROAD NOT WORTHY OF THE JOURNEY.

YOU ARE GOING TO ENCOUNTER CHALLENGES THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER, BUT HAVING THE COURAGE TO ADDRESS THESE CHALLENGES WILL ONLY MAKE YOU STRONGER.

4) IF OPPORTUNITY DOESN’T KNOCK, THEN BUILD A DOOR.

DON’T WAIT FOR OPPORTUNITIES TO COME TO YOU.  HAVE THE COURAGE TO LOOK FOR THEM AND APPLY YOUR EXPERTISE.  THERE WILL BE TIMES THAT YOU FAIL, BUT THAT’S OK – WE LEARN A LOT FROM OUR MISTAKES.

5) UNIVERSITY TEACHES YOU TO BE INDEPENDENT, BUT REMEMBER THAT WE STILL NEED EACH OTHER.

THERE IS AN OLD AFRICAN SAYING THAT STATES – “IF YOU WANT TO GO QUICKLY THEN GO ALONE, BUT IF YOU WANT TO GO FAR THEN GO TOGETHER.”  HAVE THE COURAGE TO SEEK HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT – TEAMWORK IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORATANT SKILLS YOU WILL EVER LEARN.

6) AS YOU GRADUATE, YOU ARE NOT ONLY EARNING A DIPLOMA, BUT A NEW FAMILY.

AS YOU GRADUATE FROM WEBSTER UNIVERSITY YOU HAVE JOINED A FAMILY OF MORE THAN 175,000 ALUMNI AROUD THE WORLD.OUR ALUMNI INCLUDE MANY FAMOUS AND IMPORTANT PEOPLE SUCH AS THE FORMER PRESIDENT OF INDONESIA, AND THREE ASTRONAUTS -- ONE OF WHOM WAS THE FIRST WOMAN COMMANDER OF A SPACE SHUTTLE.  THERE ARE ALSO NUMEROUS SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS MEN AND WOMEN IN ALL CORNERS OF THE WORLD – CERTAINLY INCLUDING CHENGDU! BEING PART OF SUCH A GLOBALLY DIVERSE FAMILY OF ALUMNI PROVIDES UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES.  HAVE THE COURAGE TO REACH OUT TO YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS AND CONTRIBUTE TO WEBSTER’S GLOBAL FOOTPRINT.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE, sichuan province will always be a very special place for me.  MY FIRST TRIP here, SEVERAL YEARS AGO, RESULTED IN ME TAKING A BEAUTIFUL BABY DAUGHTER BACK TO THE UNITED STATES.  I DON’T THINK I’LL BE TAKING ANYONE BACK THIS TIME, BUT for a variety of reasons IT IS A GREAT PLEASURE AND PRIVILEGE TO BE INVITED TO SHARE THIS SPECIAL OCCASION WITH YOU.

SO Graduates, your degree has you well poised for continuing professional success.  Go forth, maintain your courage, and RELISH THE JOURNEY YOU ARE ABOUT TO BEGIN!

CongratulationS!

Remarks for the Webster-USETC University IMBA

Graduation Remarks -USETC Campus

February 27, 2016, 2:30 p.m.

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, and thank you for your warm welcome. Congratulations to you all on completing your Webster-USETC IMBA studies! As a recent graduate of a Master’s program myself, I know that these past few years could not have not been easy ones, and that you have put an enormous amount of effort and time into this program. You should all feel proud of your achievements, and for the choices you have made that have brought you here today.

The Webster-USETC program is an impressive one by any measure, a meeting of East and West that brings together the best parts of both, and that symbolizes to some extent the role that you will be playing in the business community in the coming years. East-West relations are of enormous importance in the world.  China is currently the United States’ biggest trade partner, and business ties are increasingly key to our bilateral relationship.  This will become ever more important, as China’s economic influence continues to increase, and it will increasingly fall to you and your peers to decide what kind of economic power China becomes. Because you all have been studying American business, and business practices, you can help bridge the gap in understanding and communication between our two cultures.

The Webster-USETC IMBA program was a prescient one in 2003 when it was begun, as it foresaw the need China would have for a new generation of highly skilled executives and leaders who could meet the challenges of the 21st century, challenges that are unique to this period of time, and that require people who are able to operate in an increasingly global, and interconnected economy. China has played an important part in this process, and as one of the world’s largest economic powers and most important players, it will continue to play an important role on the world stage. Business visionaries who can lead and develop successful companies, especially ones who have knowledge of the international market, but are also intimately familiar with  China’s local conditions will be in great need, both for Chinese companies efforts overseas, and for international companies looking to do business in China.

The development model that China has relied upon in the past has changed, and will have to keep changing in order to keep up with the demands of a quickly changing economic landscape. The policies that have made China into one of the world’s most spectacular economic success stories will have to adapt to the challenges of a global economy, by encouraging innovation, entrepreneurship, collaboration, and risk taking. Industries that did not even exist ten years now have tremendous potential, and China is well placed to take advantage of them, as it transitions away from a state dominated model, to one where the individual businessman or woman becomes the force driving economic growth.

Tencent, Alibaba, Huawei, Wechat; these are all examples of world class companies that China has produced. However, there is much more room to grow and improve. With the recent implementation of measures designed to ease access for small companies to credit and financing, China is making it easier for the next generation of business leaders to succeed. And as Chinese companies move onto the international stage, they will be exposed to competition that will allow the best of them to flourish and grow strong. Chinese companies have shown that when given the opportunity they can compete with the world’s best, and it will be you and your colleagues who will be leading the charge.

The trend of private development is one that will be become increasingly important as Chinese companies continue to expand into the international arena. Despite development in U.S.-Sino economic ties, and that vast amount of trade conducted between the two nations, bilateral direct investment still has tremendous room to grow. Only one percent of U.S. FDI is invested in China, and despite growing numbers, while only 3.3% of Chinese FDI flows to the U.S., compared with an average of 19% globally. Clearly, there are investment opportunities waiting for both countries and their companies.

As Chinese companies increasingly come into contact with their international competitors, there will be tremendous opportunity, as well ask risk, and it will be the companies, and those who lead them, that learn to manage risk, while developing opportunities that will leave a mark on the world. The Webster-USETC IMBA program has put you in a position to leave an indelible mark on the development of China. Chinese progress has largely come as the result of private enterprise, of people, such as you, who are willing to take calculated risks, and seize the moment.

Let me conclude by once again congratulating you on your impressive achievement. You and your families should be proud of the hard work you have put it.  Thank you very much.
